Home Office
The Home Office of the United Kingdom held their third national conference on refugee integration in London on June 29-30. The conference was entitled “What Works Locally: Balancing National and Local Policies” and was attended by approximately 200 researchers, policy makers, and NGO representatives who discussed immigration, education, employment, housing, and health policies. Seventh National Metropolis Conference
The Seventh National Metropolis Conference was held in Montreal, Canada March 25-28, 2004. The general theme was “Immigration and Integration at the Heart of the Debate.” Plenary sessions addressed: immigration and the labour market; migratory flux as seen through the lens of international relations; discrimination and citizenship; globalization and the challenges of linguistic and cultural diversity; and immigration and the arts. With over 750 participants, it was our largest national conference thus far. Papers and presentations are being posted on-line at http://www.im.metropolis.net

Our Diverse Cities
In partnership with the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, L’Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS), the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Association for Canadian Studies, and a host of federal government programs and departments (Multiculturalism at Canadian Heritage, the National Secretariat on Homelessness, Infrastructure Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), Metropolis organized a series of panels and presentations and produced a new publication (Our Diverse Cities / Nos diverses cites) focusing on diversity and municipal policy. The inaugural issue of this magazine, edited by Caroline Andrew (University of Ottawa), includes interviews with Mayors and Ministers and articles by researchers, policymakers, elected officials and community practitioners on demography and diversity; arts and culture; health; housing and homelessness; infrastructure, development and planning; parks and recreation; political participation; and policing and justice.

MetroMed
The second conference of the MetroMed Project (Metropolis in the Mediterranean region) took place in Fes, Morocco on July 1-3. Participants from both European and North African countries discussed a range of issues having to do with migration in the region, primarily flows from North Africa to Europe but with some attention to the recently increased flows from sub-Saharan Africa to the Magreb and, in some cases, on to Europe. Multicultural Futures
This inter-conference event sponsored by the Australian Multicultural Foundation, Metropolis, and Monash University’s Institute for the Study of Global Movements will take place in Prato, Italy 22-23 September 2004 immediately before the 9th International Metropolis Conference. It will bring together many of the worlds’ top thinkers and practitioners to consider how multiculturalism has risen to the challenge posed by increased pluralism in liberal democracies and its continued viability as the premium policy for the integration of immigrants and refugees.
