Metropolis Events
Seventh International Metropolis Conference
The Seventh International Metropolis Conference will take place in
Oslo, Norway 9-13 September 2002. The overall theme will be "Togetherness
in Difference: Citizenship and Belonging." Sub-themes include:
globalization and the politics of migration; empowerment and the effectiveness
of citizenship; urban textures; and gender in migration. Further information
on the workshops, the plenary sessions and registration information

Croatia
The Croatian Centre for Strategic Studies hosted a Metropolis inter-conference
seminar entitled "Immigrants and Homeland" from May 9-12,
2002 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Participants from twelve countries explored
the subject of diaspora from the points of view of the homeland as

METROPOLIS LIST-SERVE ON REGIONAL IMMIGRATION
A Metropolis list-serve has been established to provide a forum for
discussing immigrant attraction, settlement and retention in centres
other than the largest metropolises. The new list-serve seeks to provide
a space for NGOs, policy makers, and researchers to share experiences
and research findings about immigration to small and medium-sized
cities, and to rural areas. To join the list-serve, or for more information,

Canadian Council on Social Development
The Canadian Council on Social Development (CCSD promotes better social
and economic security for all Canadians. A national, self-supporting,
non-profit organization, the CCSD's main product is information and
its main activity is research, focussing on concerns such as income
security, employment, poverty, child welfare, pensions and government
social policies.
It recently published "Does a Rising Tide Lift All Boats? The
Labour Market Experiences and Incomes of Recent Immigrants, 1995 to

Laidlaw Foundation
The Laidlaw Foundation is a public interest foundation that uses its

The Settlement.Org Web site helps immigrants and refugees to find
the help and information they need to start a new life in Ontario,
Canada. The goal of the site is to help settlement agencies and front-line
workers better serve newcomers. There are four objectives behind this
goal: Improve the quality of information and services provided to
newcomers; Strengthen the knowledge and expertise of agencies and
individual workers; Increase the productivity of agencies and individual
workers; Enhance communication and collaboration within the sector.
