WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Immigration has transformed
cities into increasingly diverse places. This workshop is interested in
the response to these transformations from local administrations. It will
examine how policies, programs and daily operations, specifically from
the urban planning perspective, have responded to ethno-culturally diverse
urban environments. In its broad meaning, urban
planning encompasses many aspects of urban life, including land use and
zoning, public recreation, housing, economic development, architecture
and urban design. All of these intersect with the daily experiences of
ethno-cultural minorities as they look for accommodation and employment;
they also have a great impact on the settlement and integration experience
of immigrants. Using European and North-American
examples, this session will explore concrete attempts by local officials
to address the needs of ethno-culturally diverse populations. One presenter
will speak of a program to help municipal staff work with the notion of
"reasonable accommodation". Another will compare different housing policies,
particularly in their attempts to determine an ideal mix of residents.
The workshop is aimed at researchers, policy-makers, practitioners and
NGOs working in the urban sphere. DURATION: One session
of 1,5 hours. PARTICIPANTS:
