Workshop description:
The workshop will explore two issues in particular: I) Firstly, the workshop seeks to highlight the part played by transnational family- and ethnic networks in processes of accommodation to host societies. As part of this, to what extent may home country attachments strengthen or weaken the position of women and men in countries of settlement? To what extent does the generation raised in countries of settlement become involved in the transnational reproduction of cultural identity? II) Secondly, the workshop will explore the complex ways in which diasporas take part in different processes in their countries of origin. To what extent are exile groups real players in the political games unfolding in countries like Sri Lanka and Somalia? To what extent are they effective in lobbying support from governments in countries of origin? How should governments relate to liberation movements in other countries working from their own territory?

Goals of the workshop:
The main goal of the workshop is to explore policy implications of the recent paradigm shift in migration research. Previous studies of migration have represented the flows of people to new locations in terms of the adaptation or adjustment of migrants to their ‘host societies’. More recently, research has focused on migrant networks reaching out into the realms of transnational space, linking people to their places of origin and to compatriots living in dispersed locations. These networks of persons and places are bound together through individual experiences and ‘collective’ memories of common places of origin
