Workshop description: In 1995, France and Canada were among the first countries to express an interest in the Metropolis Project. Since then, Francophones and Francophiles from several countries, including Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, have also joined the Project. In many cases, however, they have participated as individuals, on an ad hoc basis, and as a result it has not been possible to take advantage of opportunities for identifying and analysing research and public policy issues specific to the French-speaking world(s). The main areas of interest will probably include the following: demolinguistic profiles of host societies and migrant communities, best practices in linguistic and educational integration, urban dynamics, selection measures, and institutionalized and informal models for management of migration flows. During the workshop, which will take the form of a round table, a comparative, multisector approach will be the main tool for analysis and discussion of the social and public policy issues raised by participants.
In addition, the workshop will make it possible to consolidate and broaden intersectoral and international linkages among players in scientific research and public policy in the French-speaking world(s). Although it will not benefit from any official funding, a “Network for Research on Immigration and Integration in French-Speaking Societies”* will be established with a view to gaining and keeping momentum and sharing information on research needs and opportunities.
