Workshop description:
COMPSTAT is a project under EU`s fifth framework program, intended to collect information on various regularly produced datasets and statistics usable for studies of the (dis)integration of "immigrant minorities" in Europe - and potentially underlying mechanisms of discrimination against them. Eight countries are co-operating under the leadership of ICMPD in Vienna to establish the database.

Goals of the workshop:
The different actors in the project will present the reasons behind it, the use of the results, and most important, the way ahead. The way ahead will have two tracks; one is to expand the number of participating countries (an application for that is filed to EU), and the other to discuss what kinds of analyses should be performed once there are real data available, and how this analytical work can be organised. The project is just finalised before the conference. Participants will be colleagues working on parallel projects, to have their input to our future work, and to establish contacts with the other networks.

Policy relevance and topic: Integration of immigrants seems to be of vital interests in most European countries, and the knowlegde base on a comparative basis is almost non-existent.

How international comparisons are included: By promoting the establishment and use of comparable data.

Presenters / participants /other information
Part 1
14.30 - 16.00
The first part will be focused on "COMPSTAT today", where we present the meta database itself, and the ideas and work behind it.

· Presentation of the back ground for COMPSTAT, what was the idea behind it, how did it go and what has been achieved. Irene Stacher, ICMPD, Vienna.

· Demonstration of the data base, by ICMPD or Statistics Norway

· Future developments ICMPD

· Updating of the information for countries already included

· Expansion of the number of participants (MIGINTEG). Countries already interested in participation should make their intensions known.

· Expectation for the base. Will try to find a ministerial or NGO representative with knowledge of the database to give some reflections on the use of data for developing monitoring instruments, and in integration policy making.

· How to initiate comparative research projects and to develop indicators and other projects on the data in the meta database describes (introduction to the next section)

How can the network can be made visible, for instance through nationally financed analyses?
Which strategy to be followed if there are no EU-resources available for expansion and analyses? Statistics Norway

Coffee break 16.00 - 16.30

Part 2
16.30 - 18.00
The second part will focus on the way ahead, with emphasis on analytical exploitation, and the how to find economic resources for the future work. The Expression of Interest sent to the 6th Framework Program is our point of departure.

· Rinus Pennix: The conceptual frame for analyses of integration of immigrants

· Examples of analyses that can be performed within some main domains of integration. We will approach the following topics, and persons to take the responsibility for introducing it.

· Labour market
· Housing
· Education
· Cross cultural marriages

Summary:
The structure will be that the initiators and participants of the COMPSTAT project present the work so far. If we have a positive answer from EU for a
request for expanding the number of paricipants, the new work will be discussed, else focus will be on organisation of analyses of integration, based on this data.
Keywords of the Workshop are: Integration, metadata, comparisons, Europe.
