GENERAL INFORMATION

Norway has moved from being a country with a significant reliance on agriculture, fishing, and other activities related to the sea, shipping and trade, to an economy where knowledge-industries and oil are important features. Its small population, 4,5 million people, has over the last few decades received large numbers of immigrants, primarily from other Nordic countries, but also from more distant countries. To a significant degree, these immigrants, as in most other countries, reside in the large urban areas. Oslo, therefore, with 19 per cent of its population belonging to the immigrant population (where of 15 per cent from non-western countries and 4 per cent from Western countries), is by European standards rapidly changing into a cosmopolitan city. Daily non-stop flights (New York - 8 hrs) and major cities in Europe, Amsterdam (1hr 45mns), Frankfurt (1hr 55mns), London (2hrs 15mns) and Paris (2hrs 15mns). Flight book - SAS OFFICIAL CARRIER Our new international airport Oslo Airport Gardermoen opened in October 1998. It is one of the most modern airports in Europe, situated 50 km from the city centre. An Airport Express Train Flytoget links the airport to the city centre in 19 minutes (approx. NOK 140 one way) Arriving in Oslo we advise you to choose the easiest and quickest way from the airport, which is to take the Airport Express Train to Oslo Central Station (OSLO S). Tickets are available at all Airport Express Train stations, at ticket counters as well as card and cash ticket vending machines. There is no seat booking on the Airport Express Train. For more information:http://www.osl.no/english/ In addition, several airport busses leave the airport every hour (approx. NOK 100 one way). By bus it takes approx. 50 minutes from the airport to the Radisson SAS Plaza Hotel. By SEA: Comfortable and pleasant overnight cruises on car/passenger ferries to Oslo from Kiel (Germany) and Copenhagen, Fredrikshavn and Hirtshals (Denmark). By RAIL Modern, clean and comfortable trains link Oslo with the other Scandinavian capitals and the rest of the continent. INTERNATIONAL VISITORS All foreign nationals who wish to come to Norway must have a valid passport or other identity documents which are recognised as a travel document. Foreign nationals from a number of countries cannot enter Norway without a visa. Simultaneous interpretation between the two languages will be available at the plenary sessions only. TIME ZONE GMT + 1 hour INSURANCE Neither the organiser nor the Conference bureau are able to take any responsibility, whatsoever, for injury or damage to persons or properties during the conference. Participants are therefore kindly requested to take out their own insurance BANKS All banks are open from Monday to Friday from 09.00 till 16.00. Nearly every bank has a 24-hours cash machine (ATM). ATTIRE As at previous international Metropolis events, the conference attire will be Óbusiness casualÓ. CLIMATE AND CLOTHING September is early autumn. You may experience sunshine and 10 ø 15 C. PLEASE NOTE All participants have to register Participants and presenters/organisers need to secure their own funding to participate in this conference. Workshop presenters/organisers have to pay travel and accommodation in addition to the registration fee for the conference. After receipt of the registration form, the Metropolis secretariat will send you a confirmation. REGISTRATION AND EARLY BIRD The organizers kindly request you to register before as soon as possible. The first 200 persons that sign up as participants and pay within 14 days after receiving the invoice are entitled to the early bird registration. Please note: since July Early Bird fees are no longer available METHOD OF PAYMENT Payment should be made in NOK. Use of major credit cards (VISA, Euro card / MasterCard, Diners and American Express are accepted). An invoice will be sent if credit card is not used. CANCELLATIONS Notification of cancellation must be in writing, fax or e-mail to Thue & Selvaag Forum AS. The refund will be returned after the congress as follows: Cancellation before 15 August 2002: 50% refund Cancellation after 15 August 2002: no refund HOTEL ACCOMMODATION Accommodation has been reserved in several hotels in Oslo at special conference rates. All accommodation rates are per room per night, breakfast included. The hotel bill is to be settled upon departure. No deposit. Cancellation of hotelroom has to be made in writing to Thue & Selvaag Forum AS no later than 14 days before arrival, otherwise we have to charge you for the roomrate for one night.
